Chatha Hygiene

16th July 2021

Chatha Hygiene is a family-run company based in Rochester, Kent. Established in 2002, they provide professional washroom and hygiene services to all size businesses around the South East.

Working in a business that deals directly with waste, Chatha Hygiene takes its responsibilities for disposal seriously. They are skilled at dealing with many types and the changing regulations around each.

90% of waste is recycled

Approximately 90% of the waste they remove for clients is recycled. Waste that cannot be recycled; for example, medical and sanitary, are dealt with according to best practice and legislation. Clients can rest assured that they meet the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act.

All waste collected from clients’ premises are transported straight to their licensed incineration plants, minimising the risks of cross contamination through handling and storage.

Over two billion items of sanitary products are flushed down toilets in Britain every year, 7.2% of waste on beaches is sanitary related debris. Chatha incinerate this waste, to reduce environmental issues associated with landfill or simply dumping at sea.

Investing to recycle more

A few years ago, recognizing the difficulties in dealing with canisters, the business invested in a machine to crush cans on site, so that they can be recycled. This means that they can now crush and recycle the 2,000 air freshener canisters a month that they deal with on behalf of clients.

Greener vehicles

The team are interested in seeing how greener vehicles could benefit their business, and jumped at the chance to take part in a scheme funded by Kent County Council to use a hybrid vehicle for a two-month period. This is an ongoing trial, but one that Chatha Hygiene view positively.

Reducing water waste

Another way Chatha Hygiene make a difference is through their water management systems. This is incorporated into the water supply to the urinal cistern, and controls flush frequency by only allowing flushing when the user is detected by the sensor on the unit. This system can have a massive impact and reduce water consumption by up to 90%.

Championing recycled products

Chatha Hygiene is always looking at new ways to be more environmentally friendly. The team strives to choose eco-friendly suppliers and products whenever possible.

Chatha Hygiene are delighted to supply some of its most popular items: toilet roll, paper towels and blue roll from an environmentally friendly range. The ‘Honest’ range uses chemical free, locally sourced paper and comes in plastic free packaging. This is a natural choice for clients wanting to make sustainable choices and one that Chatha Hygiene urges customers to consider.

Fiona Colbourne, Office Manager, said “We all need to be doing what we can to look after the environment. At Chatha Hygiene we are always looking to improve what we do and make it as easy as possible for our clients to make greener choices. If we all do what we can, we can make a difference.”

Kate Willard OBE, Estuary Envoy, said “Chatha Hygiene and clearly taking their responsibilities for dealing with waste seriously and looking to improve their impact on the environment across their operations. This mindset is commendable, and I am proud to welcome them as an Estuary Visionary.”
