Ward Security

30th July 2020

Ward Security helps businesses protect their people, property and assets by providing intelligent security solutions. Established in 2000, it turns over £50m annually and has over 1,060 staff members.

Ward Security’s broad client base ranges from managing agents like CBRE and Savills, and includes looking after distinctive buildings such as Mercers Livery Hall, high profile data centres, schools and colleges, and manufacturing businesses, to name a few. Its diverse portfolio of services includes a strong team of security officers, electronic security measures, patrol dogs, Explosive and Drug detection dogs, and so much more. The company has a national footprint and is named in the Top 30 UK Companies in the Regulated Security Sector. The company accredits its success to two things: their people on the ground who deliver excellent service and providing tailored security solutions.

Ward Security is serious about sustainability. The company holds an ISO 14000 environmental management system accreditation, reflecting the importance it places on minimising its impact on the environment.  While it operates a fleet of 90 vans, limiters ensure speed, acceleration and braking is optimally managed, which has reduced emissions by 25% and financially increased the average mile per gallon by 20%.

They have also introduced environmentally innovative technology such as the use of solar-powered CCTV Towers to provide security in remote locations, and ultimately removing the need for fossil fuel powered CCTV. Equally, the reliance on other back up fuels is far less than other camera towers in the market and this reduces their carbon footprint further.

They have invested in quality, tailored, uniforms for their team, which will enable them to halve the number of uniforms they would usually purchase on a three-year contract cycle. The uniforms are machine washable, reducing chemical harm to the environment from dry-cleaning. Wherever possible, they employ people who live locally, which minimises travel and also helps Ward to give back financially to the communities it operates within. Its sustainability measures have resulted in an 18% decrease in water consumption; 13% decrease in electricity usage; and 21% decrease in paper usage.

Ward Security is dedicated to talent development within the company. To support this an Employee Star Awards initiative to recognise excellence is organised, senior staff are enrolled in the Security Institute to aid their continuous professional development, and all employees undergo CPD training to advance skills and reward hard work. 18 months ago, they launched their own training academy, for both their own staff and external organisations, to give people the correct skills to get people back into work.

The location of Ward’s administration offices in the Thames Estuary at the historic dockyard in Medway offers a beautiful setting for their place of work and provides them with the space they need. The rail links are superb; High Speed 1 stops in 3 stations within 2 miles of the offices, journey time to central London is 45 minutes, and City Airport is an hour and a half away, facilitating their international work. David Ward states that There is a huge pool of talent in the Estuary, with many universities and colleges in their vicinity, the structure is there for business, and there are facilities there for family life – we wouldn’t move ever.

Our Estuary Envoy, Kate Willard OBE comments: Ward Security are leaders in the security sector, and their Estuary-wide contribution to good, green growth proves them a model business. It’s great to see a successful company of their size benefit from our resources, talent and unique location. They are a true asset to the region.
