THE GOLDEN HINDE WELCOMES THE THAMES ESTUARY ENVOY

30th January 2024

The Golden Hinde was delighted to welcome Kate Willard, Thames Estuary Envoy and Chair of the Thames Estuary Growth Board, on board the ship on Thursday 25 February. The Golden Hinde showed her the ongoing renovation work that is being undertaken by the expert shipwright team and how the Golden Hinde is used to tell general visitors and educational groups the story of the first English circumnavigation of the world and what it was like to live and sail aboard a 16th century ship.

After her short ‘voyage’, Kate commented:

“The Golden Hinde is a well-known and loved Thames landmark. But as I discovered on my visit, it is not just a static object to be looked at.  The team who run the ship provide all sorts of educational events – both for schools and general visitors – and they are keen to develop more links with the local community.  I was also really impressed that the ship is being renovated employing the traditional skills that would have been used in Tudor times.  All in all The Golden Hinde is a great asset for the Thames Estuary.”
