Ashwells Reclaimed Timber: sustainable business superheroes

23rd June 2021

It was an immense pleasure to meet with Ashwells Reclaimed Timber recently. This brilliant Essex-based company is one of our amazing Visionary businesses, specialists in reclaiming and repurposing timber. Led by a small team, Ashwells punch well above their weight.

Speaking with Deb and Janine Davies-Tutt it was impossible not to be impressed not only their passion for sustainability but also the high calibre of their achievements. I’d like to share a few here:

Female Entrepreneurship Winners

Janine Davies-Tutt Managing Director, was one of just 15 business owners to feature in NatWest #BeTheRoleModel campaign. Chosen from over 3000 applicants the campaign set out to find inspirational entrepreneurs and Janine certainly fits the bill!

NatWest were (rightly) impressed by Janine’s career reclaiming timber and preventing further deforestation, as well as her commitment to bringing together like-minded companies within the reclamation sector to form SALVO UK.

Supporting sustainable construction

Ashwells are boldly pushing to see tropical timber reuse increase by 50%, and have worked on a number of beautiful projects with a sustainable ethos.

Right here in the Thames Estuary, Ashwells supplied the reclaimed timber for Ripple Greenway. This lovely project was a collaboration between London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Sustrans and Trees for Cities where reclaimed Oak, supplied by Ashwells is reused in this fantastic green space and cycle path redevelopment.

London’s new Blossom Garden

Ashwells were one of the team behind creation of the London Blossom Garden at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London (E20).

The garden is a living memorial to those who have lost their lives to Covid-19, and was opened Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and the Director General of the National Trust, Hilary McGrady who paid tribute to London’s key workers.

Ashwells supplied FSC® certified timber, reclaimed from across London, to be repurposed into beautiful, sustainable walkways and benches. Working with Davies White / Edible Bus Stop to bring the garden to life and make it a peaceful place to contemplate and remember.

At Europe’s largest landscaping awards, the British Association of Landscape Industries’ (BALI), FSC® certified reclaimed timber supplied by Ashwells featured in four of the award winning projects.

I am delighted that timber from across the Estuary is finding life again in beautiful sustainable projects.

Reclaimed Oak from Chatham Dry Docks in Kent features in the acclaimed Urban Retreat project, while the woodland walkway in RHS Back to Nature garden is made from Keruing timber from Southend Pier.

Connecting green businesses

I am also thrilled to bits that Ashwells and Ground Control have connected with each other and I am really excited about what they will achieve together!

Our Estuary Visionary scheme is free, and open to businesses of any size, in any sector that is reducing their environmental impact. If you know a business in East London, North Kent or South Essex that is striving to be greener please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch.
